Abstract

1433781 Flame retardant latex compositions for carpet scrims MONSANTO CO 26 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 14338/73 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division B2] A coating composition for carpet scrims comprises a polymer latex and 5-180 p.b.w. per 100 of latex of a mixture of a thermosetting condensate of an aldehyde with a nitrogen-containing compound and/or a phenol and a phosphate, phosphite, organophosphonate, organopolyphosphonate or phosphoramidate ester or polyammonium polyphosphate. The latex may be of a polymer or copolymer of an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate or vinyl chloride, or of PV Acetate, EVA or a rubber; the condensate may be an MF, UF or PF resin and contain 15-40 p.b.w. of P compound per 100 of resin. Char-forming agents such as dipentaerythritol may also be present. In Example. 1 binders are prepared containing an MF resin, an acrylic latex and a phosphite-phosphonate or phenyl di-isodecyl phosphate or a mixture of these with a chlorinated paraffin. In Example 2 polyammonium polyphosphate and/or a polyphosphonate is used and optionally dipentaerythritol is added. In Example 3 MEK is added to ingredients as in Example 2. The compositions are applied to polypropylene scrims.
