Abstract
1433737 Brake boosters GIRLING Ltd 19 April 1973 [25 /April 1972 30 Nov 1972] 19054/72 and 55304/72 Heading F2F In a servo-booster for a vehicle brake system in which a load-actuating member 92 is displaceable by the application of a differential fluid pressure across a movable wall, i.e. an elastic diaphragm 24, dividing a housing 10 of the booster into a pair of fluid chambers 26, 28 the differential pressure is controlled by a valve 31 comprising a flexible valve closure member 60 located within a central bore portion of a valve body member 32 within the housing 10. One end of the member 60 has a surface 70 adapted to selectably cooperate with a pair of valve seats 72, 74 for controlling the differential pressure across the wall 24, the latter including a conically deformable, annular deflecting plate 52 which is not directly connected to the valve body member but which abuts a fulcrum plate 90 carried by the member 92. A mechanical coupling is provided between the member 92 and the valve body 32 whereby axial displacement of the member 92 is followed by the valve body, such coupling being effected by a hollow, generally cylindrical member 102 which is constructionally distinct from both the valve body and the member 92 and which is arranged coaxially of the booster axis; one end of the member 102 is connected to the valve body and the other end thereof is mechanically coupled to the member 92. As shown, the member 102, which is slotted for passage of the fingers 51 of the plate 52, is connected to the plate 90 by means of bent-over lugs 104 extending through apertures 106 in the plate, and to the valve body by flanges 108 and 112 respectively of the body and a retaining ring 114 screwed on to the valve body 32. A thrust member 46, slidable in a bore portion 40 of the valve body, slidably receives the member 92 and is connected by a ball-andsocket connection with a valve-actuating rod 48. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) a cup-shaped member (266) is mounted on an output member (258) and has portions (266a), (266b), the latter being screwed to the valve body 236, and the radially inner periphery (224a) of the diaphragm (246) is clamped between a recess in the portion (266b) and a shoulder (270) on the valve body.
