Abstract

1432274 Sorting UNISEABCH Ltd 29 April 1974 [1 May 1973 30 Aug 1973] 18686/74 Heading G4H Articles to be sorted are each allocated a label bearing indicia indicative of a serial number, information relating to the sorting of an article being fed together with the associated serial number to a computer programmed to control the operation of sorting devices in accordance therewith. Each article is fed (e.g. on a conveyer belt) through a label reader which sends the read serial number to the computer which transmits routing instructions to the conveyor system to open the required branch path for the article. If an article is found to have a faulty or absent label, then it is passed for manual sorting, as are articles found to have the same serial number. Applications to airline baggage and postal parcel sorting are described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown).
