Abstract
1431474 Radar JAMES SCOTT (ELECTRONIC ENG) Ltd 30 July 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 43742/73 Addition to 1289496 Heading H4D In a C.W. Doppler radar including a microwave generator comprising a Gunn effect device mounted in a resonant cavity, two mixer diodes are supplied with received signals which are in phase, and are also supplied with local oscillator signals from the generator which are in quadrature, said phase relationships being obtained by suitably positioning the diodes and the Gunn effect device relative to each other. An indication of the direction of a target is derived from the output signals of the diodes. In a first embodiment a resonant cavity 2, Fig. 1, comprises a portion of rectangular cross-section waveguide which has a short-circuiting plate 6 at one end, and which extends into a horn aerial 1 at the other end. A Gunn effect device 3 is mounted in the cavity 2 at a distance of n#/2 from the plate 6 (n = an integer, # = the operating wavelength). Spaced on either side of the device 3 are Schottky diodes 8, 9, their respective distances R1, R2 from said device being such that R1-R2=#/4 and R1+R2=m# (m= an integer). If m=1, R1=5#/8 and R2= 3#/8. The signals derived from the diodes may be processed by apparatus of the kind described in Specification 1,254,443. In another embodiment the Gunn effect device 3, Fig. 3, is housed in a lateral cavity 14, having a short-circuiting plate 15 at one end, and connected at the other end to the main cavity 2 by an H- or E-plane junction. The plate 6 may be replaced by a matched load. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,214,833.
