Abstract

1431408 Sewing CALZE MALERBA SpA 17 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 31739/74 Heading D1G In making tights two tubular leg pieces are drawn onto two parallel horizontal arms 2, 3 of a sewing machine, which cuts a slit from crotch to waist and sews two parallel seams on each side of the slit to join the legs together to form the body portion. Two pairs of needles and two pairs of hooks form the stitching shown in Fig. 10, which has a transverse covering thread 29 below the material and a filler thread 28 above it. In the machine four needles 9, 9a and a blade 11 are carried by block 8 reciprocated up and down a fixed guide rod 8f by links 7 and 5 driven by a connecting rod 6 and crank shaft 6d. The upper pair of hooks 12, 12a are carried on a block 12c which oscillates about a guide rod 19, being driven through a swivelling ball joint 14b, 14c from the crank shaft 6d. The lower pair of hooks 16, 16a are carried by and oscillated (Fig. 2) in a conventional manner by a rod 17. Oscillating thread guides 15, 15a are carried on a rod 15b (Fig. 15) which is carried on a fixed member 15f and oscillated by a link 15l. In operation the blade cuts a slit as the two pairs of needles stitch the seams, moving from the crotch to the waist. The blade is ahead of the needles, and one pair of needles is slightly ahead of the other with the blade and the inner needle of each pair being aligned along the centre line of arm. Thus, when starting to sew several stitches are made before reaching the beginning of the slit (Fig. 10) to strengthen the end of the slit.
