Abstract

1431379 Supply circuits for arc systems ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 18 July 1973 [5 May 1972] 21105/72 Heading H2H A system for striking an arc between the spaced electrodes 11, 12 of a plasma gun 10 comprises a power supply, the voltage of which is insufficient to strike the arc but is sufficient to sustain an arc after striking, a source 26 of alternating voltage for striking the arc and an inductance 30 which inhibits the passage of alternating current from the source 26 to the power supply. The power supply for sustaining the arc is an 80 volt D.C. supply connected between terminals marked + VE and - VE. Cooling water is supplied to the electrodes via inlet and outlet pipes 24, 17, and via metal lined pipes 15, 16. The D.C. supply is converted to a 10-15 kilovolt supply at a frequency of 2 kc/s. by the source 26 which comprises a two transistor oscillator. The inductance 30 presents a high impedance to the H.T. supply which is fed to the electrodes via a rectifier and an adjustable spark gap 29. A switch 23 prevents the arc being struck unless cooling water is flowing.
