Abstract

1431350 Web winding WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 7 Dec 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 56920/73 Heading B8R An apparatus for continuously winding a plastics lay-flat tube 3, Fig. 1, composed of interconnected plastics bags comprises a pair of tube feed rollers 5, 6 followed by a loop forming store and a winding station which includes a pair of automatically changeable and alternately operable winding mandrels 35, 36 each including axially retractable rods 37, 38, respectively, to define apertures enabling the tube to pass therethrough, Fig. 2, the mandrels being driven at a lower speed during winding and at a higher speed during core change to sever the tube at a location P1 corresponding to a line of weakness between adjacent bags. In operation a carriage 17 supporting a loop forming roller 15 is adjusted such in conjunction with roller 24 supporting lever 22 which rests on a stop 26, that a line of weakness is disposed below a spark gap 13 and a further line of weakness is disposed intermediate the mandrels 35, 36, Fig. 2 whereupon the winding is started by, e.g. the drive 47 driving the mandrel 35 at a lower speed. The spark gap 13 produces a count which is applied to a counter 14 in turn supplying an output signal to a controller 49 for the mandrel drives 47, 48, when a predetermined count is reached. The controller 49 stops the drive 47 and causes the drive 48 of mandrel 36 to rotate the latter at a higher speed in consequence of which the tube 3 is withdrawn from the store 22...26, which when depleted operates a switch 31 to apply a signal to the controller 49 for lowering the mandrel driving speed. Meanwhile, during the higher mandrel speed and removal of tube from the store, the tube has been attached to the mandrel 36 and severed from the lay-flat tube wound on the mandrel 35 Fig. 7.
