Abstract
1430669 Treating continuous textile webs BRUCKNER APPARATEBAU GmbH 7 Nov 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 51613/73 Heading D1P In a method of finishing a continuous web of textile material containing fibres which swell in water, an aqueous swelling agent is applied to the textile at a first location, to give a moisture content of 10-40% owf, and a finishing agent dissolved in a chlorinated hydrocarbon is applied at a second location remote from the first, a time delay e.g. of between 10 seconds and 10 minutes occuring between the two applications. The swelling agent may be water itself, or may contain a base such as soda, caustic soda or a tertiary amine, a wetting agent for the textile or a catalyst for the reaction of the finshing means with the fibres. It may be applied as a liquid preferably between 20‹ and 60‹C, or a gas. The temperature of the swelling agent may be raised during the delay period. The swelling agent and finishing means may be applied by passing a web of the textile over spaced applicator rolls dipping into troughs of the swelling agent and finish respectively and arranged so that the agent and finish are applied to the same or opposite sides of the web. Multiple deflector rolls may be provided in the delay zone for the treatment of woven fabric so that it undergoes repeated deflections. Alternatively, for the treatment of looped fabrics, an endless carrier belt may be provided to support the web without tension in the delay zone between the applicator rolls. For the application of the swelling agent as a gas, the first applicator roll is replaced by a vapour chamber provided with deflector rolls through which the web passes. After application of the finish, the textile may 'be allowed to equilibrate at room temperature for up to 10 minutes before drying. The textile preferably comprises cellulose fibres and may be a woven cotton fabric. The finish may be a modified melamine creaseproofing resin dissolved in perchlorethylene.
