1430310 Apparatus for continuous application of treating agents to webs of materials ARTOS GES FUR INDUSTRIELLE FOR SCHUNG UND ENTWICKLUNG C A MEIR-WINDHORST 13 April 1973 [15 April 1972(2)] 17784/73 Heading D1L A process for applying chemical treating agents, such as dyestuffs or finishing chemicals to moving webs of textile material or homogeneous film or foil of plastics material, comprises heating the web, heating a column of treatment liquid containing the treating agent, feeding the heated web through the treatment liquid, feeding fresh treatment liquid into said column at opposite sides of and throughout the width of the web in an amount proportional to the absorption of the liquid by the web so as to maintain the height of the column of liquid substantially constant (e.g. at 5 to 15 cms), and subjecting the web to heat treatment to effect fixing or reaction of the treating agent, the process being continuous and being carried out without exposure of the web to free atmosphere. Apparatus for carrying out the process is illustrated with reference to Fig. 1 and comprises a web heating chamber 10 (closed to the free atmosphere) an applicator device 12 for applying treatment liquid to the web, and a heat treatment chamber 14 (closed to the free atmosphere) for effecting fixing or reaction of treating agents in said liquid, in which said applicator device has a passage for the web containing a column of treatment liquid and extending between the heating chamber and a trough defined by squeezing rollers 16 forming part of the applicator device and closing the lower end of the applicator to the free atmosphere, in which a passage for the web between the applicator device and the fixing or reaction chamber is closed to the free atmosphere, and in which means is provided for heating the treatment liquid, and for feeding the latter to said column at opposite sides of and throughout the width of the web in an amount proportional to the absorption of the liquid by the web so as to maintain the height of the column of liquid substantially constant when the apparatus is in use. A drying chamber 13 may be situated between applicator 12 and heat treatment chamber 14. Fig. 2 illustrates the provision of overflow channels 24 for maintaining the liquid level SP constant.
