Abstract

1430177 Driving and extracting piles NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 July 1974 [26 July 1973 3 April 1974] 35701/73 and 14726/74 Heading E1H The driving or extraction of a reinforced concrete pile or pipe, or caisson into or from a fine grain medium such as clay is facilitated by giving the reinforcement a negative electrical potential relative to the ground. An electrically conducting stake to act as an anode is driven into the ground, preferably at a distance such that the nominal electrical gradient between the pile and the anode is “ volt/cm, and in a location where the reaction to the pile driving or extracting thrust is being taken. The electrical contact on the pile may be welded to longitudinal or helical reinforcing bars in the pile. Alternatively the reinforcement consists of high tensile steel fibres, preferably 0.01 inch diameter and 1 inch long dispersed throughout the concrete and amounting to 2% by volume of the concrete. A pile may be driven vertically by vibration or by an impact hammer. A pipe may be inserted horizontally by the use of a jack.
