Abstract

1429898 Hot tops OGLEBAY NORTON CO 15 July 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 31263/74 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions D1-D2] An insulating composition for use in hot topping comprises, on a dry basis, 5-95 wt. per cent fibrous Wollastonite, at least 3 wt. per cent of a different second fibrous material selected from inorganic fibrous materials, organic fibrous materials and mixtures thereof, said inorganic fibrous material being present in an amount within the range 0-20 wt. per cent and said organic fibrous material being present in an amount 0-8 wt. per cent; an inorganic particulate filler present in an amount 0-90 wt. per cent; and 2-8 wt. per cent of a binder selected from inorganic and organic binders. The second fibrous material may be cellulosic pulp or a mixture of glass fibres and cellulosic pulp. Other inorganic fibrous materials specified are rock wool and glass wool. The inorganic particulate filler is preferably Wollastonite but diatomaceous earths, perlite, burnt rice hulls, olivine, kyanite, mullite and fly ash may be used. The preferred binder is a phenol-formaldehyde resin but urea-formaldehyde resin and sodium silicate may also be used. Specific formulations are given in the examples.
