Abstract

1428278 Extraction of zinc, cadmium and indium BAYER AG and DUISBURGER KUPFERHUTTE 9 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37798/73 Heading C1A Zn, Cd and In are recovered by selectively extracting a solution containing also Cl<SP>1</SP> with an organic liquid containing a phosphonic acid di-ester and/or a phosphinic acid ester (including 1-oxo-phospholine derivatives) as metal extractor and eluting. Excess chloride (1-3 mol./l.) and at least one other non-ferrous metal may be present. The pH of the solution may be 0-6 and the temperature 0-60‹ C. Zn and In may be preferentially extracted at pH#1À5 whilst Cd may be preferentially extracted at pH<1À5, e.g. at a concentration of HCl of 0À5-1 mol. per litre. The process may be carried out by continuous countercurrent extraction. The metal extractant may be diluted with inert water-insoluble solvents, e.g. kerosene. Elution may be carried out with water containing Na 2 SO 4 and the metal recovered from the resulting solution. Zn ions and Cl ions may be extracted from a solution of zinc sulphate containing chloride ions to give a solution substantially free from chloride ions.
