Abstract

1427731 Magnetic records EMI Ltd 12 March 1973 [18 March 1972] 12777/72 Heading G5R [Also in Division C7] A magnetic recording medium, e.g. tape, card, disc &c., comprises a plastics substrate having a magnetic oxide coating, e.g. γ Fe 2 O 3 , which is coated with a thin metallic magnetic film. The film preferably comprises Co-Cr having 1-20% Cr, but other suitable alloys are Co-W, Co-P, Co-Mb, and Co-Ni-P. In an example, the oxide coating is about 12 Ám thick and the metal film between 0À1 and 0À2 Ám thick. The film may be applied by sputtering or vapour deposition and may be formed over the whole or part of the oxide layer, the latter system being utilized in manufacturing media for video and sound track recording.
