Abstract

1427397 Surgical forceps IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 March 1974 [24 April 1973 14 Nov 1973] 19278/73 and 52875/73 Heading B4W [Also in Divisions A5-A6] Surgical forceps or tweezers (Fig. 2) comprises arms 1, 2 resiliently joined at 3, the arms having jaws 4, 5 at their respective free ends which are prevented from cross-beaking by rigid plates 8, 9 hinged to each other and to the arms 1, 2 by webs 10, 11, 12, the plates 8, 9 extending normally to the plane of movement of arms 1, 2 and being of equal or narrower width. The structure formed by plates 8, 9 is more flexible than that formed by the arms 1, 2 and intermediate section 3. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) forceps in the form of selflocking scissors additionally include operating levers 13, 14 joined to the arms 1, 2 and to each other by flexible webs 15, 16, 17. The jaws may be pointed, spatulate or curved. The forceps may be one-shot injection moulded as a single piece of plastics material, e.g. of polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, or any of these materials together with a filler, e.g. talc or glass fibre.
