Abstract

1426872 Laminates PERMANITE Ltd 19 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 18698/72 Addition to 1271233 Heading B5N A laminate comprises a backing layer bonded to a flexible waterproof sheet material, the sheet material comprising a mixture of bitumen having a softening point of 70‹ C. or more, synthetic elastomeric or thermoplastic polymeric material compatible with the bitumen and non- fibrous and fibrous reinforcement filler, the synthetic elastomeric or thermoplastic polymeric material constituting at most 50 wt. per cent of the mixture. The backing layer may be aluminium sheet or foil, cork or asbestos sheet or polypropylene mesh. The synthetic elastomeric or thermoplastic polymeric material may be chlorosulphonated polyethylene, alone or in admixture with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and the fibrous reinforcement filler may be of glass, mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic thermoplastic material. The backing layer may be bonded to the waterproof sheet material by applying it to the heat-softened surface of the waterproof sheet material, or by the use of a thermoplastic adhesive, e.g. bitumen or a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride or styrene. In the example an aluminium foil coated with polyvinyl chloride is heated with hot air or infra-red coated with polyvinyl hot air or infra-red heaters to render the polyvinyl chloride adhesive and led continuously with a waterproof sheet material direct from the calender and still hot, between the nip of a pair of rolls to produce a laminate. The exposed surface of the aluminium foil may be primed with a latex primer so that it can be adhered with bitumen to a deck or other surface, or coated with a polyurethane varnish which may be clear or pigmented to give the appearance of a lead or copper surface.
