Abstract
1426796 Microcapsule adhesive sheet material 3M UNITED KINGDOM LTD 16 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 38811/73 Heading B2E A sheet is coated on one or both sides with a layer of adhesive, and frangible or collapsible, non-adhesive micro-capsules partially embedded in the layer of adhesive, the microcapsules being uniformly distributed in such quantity that the surface of the adhesive layer can be slid about on an adhesive receptivesurface without adhering thereto, the microcapsules containing either a solvent for the adhesive or a solution of an adhesive and being collapsible on application of pressure to release their contents. Preferably the capsules cover <SP>1</SP>/ 3 to <SP>2</SP>/ 3 of the adhesive layer and their walls may be urea-formaldehyde or gelatin with cores of hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents for the adhesive which may be rubber-resin or acrylic. The sheet may be flexible or rigid, of materials such as paper or plastics. The adhesive is preferably tacky. In Examples, an unplasticised p.v.c. tape is coated with pressure sensitive adhesive (2 and 7) or a rubber-based pressure sensitive adhesive, and then coated with capsules containing adhesive solution (1, 2) or capsules containing xylene (7); or paper sheet (3 to 6) is coated with self-reactive acrylic polymer in isopropyl acetate (3) or vinyl-acrylic copolymer emulsion (4 to 6), then further coated with capsules containing pressure sensitive adhesive (3), cyclohexane (4), dibutyl phthalate (5) or xylene (6).
