Abstract

1426109 Making magnetic steel sheet; altering molecular structure WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 8 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 6230/73 Headings B3V and B3A [Also in Division C7] Magnetic alloys containing in percentage by wt. are hot worked, annealed and cold worked in one or more stages, the final stage at least involving a reduction in cross-sectional area of at least 75%, and finally annealed between 800‹ C. and the Ac 1 temperature to produce essentially a (100) [001] structure, in which preferably at least 50 vol. per cent of the grains have their (100) plane oriented within 10 degrees of the surface and at least 50% have their [001] direction aligned within 10 degrees of the rolling direction. During the final anneal the alloy may be subjected to a magnetic field of 5-50 oe. Hot working may be carried out at 1000- 1100‹ C. while in the case of multi-stage coldworking inter-stage annealing may be carried out at 700-950‹ C., and ealier stages may be warm-working at up to 300‹ C. Annealing is preferably carried out in a hydrogen atmosphere having a dew point of less than - 40‹ C. It is stated that by increasing the Cr content to 0À3-1À5% a substantially (110) [001] texture is obtained, while any of the alloys may contain up to 9% of an element or elements improving volume resistivity.
