Abstract

1425857 Welding by fusion MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 21 Feb 1973 8408/73 Heading B3R Apparatus for aligning two plates, e.g. of ship hull modules, in preparation for their being vertically butt welded together edge-toedge comprises front plate face engaging rollers 4 journalled in sub-frames 5 fast with pistons 8 acting in hydraulic cylinders 7 secured to a vertically movable main frame 3, and rear plate face engaging rollers 11 journalled in a rear sub-frame 10 connected to said cylinders 7 via main frame members 12 adapted to pass through a weld-preparation gap between the plates, the rollers 4, 11 being of width to straddle the plates, and oil-pressurizing of the cylinders 7 acting to urge the rollers 4, 11 towards each other to grip the plates. The rollers 4 each have a central flange 6 for engagement in the weld preparation gap. The main frame also supports welding apparatus (14, Fig. 1, not shown).
