Abstract
1425756 Matrix displays PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32793/73 Heading G5C [Also in Divisions H3-H5] Information represented by electrical pulses is stored in discrete charge regions of a transparent quasi-ferroelectric plate, and the consequential birefringent changes are detected for information read-out by polarized optical radiation, the quasi-ferroelectric material having the property of storing a pulse applied to a pair of surface electrodes for a prolonged charge period provided the electrodes are isolated from the pulse source before the pulse terminates, while stored information is erasable at any time by short circuiting the electrodes. Quasiferroelectric behaviour is also known as field induced ferroelectricity and is obtainable in the composition (Pb 1-1À5y La y )(Zr x Ti 1-x )O 3 , where x and y lie in a rectangular system of co-ordinates. A range of values for x and y is given, Fig. 4 (not shown), a preferred composition having the values of x=0À65, y=0À09. A quasi-ferroelectric test plate 1 is shown in Fig. 5, which comprises four earthed electrodes 3-6 and a common electrode 2 connected to a pulse source together defining four discrete charge storage regions 7-10. A test system for optical measurements is shown in Fig. 6, which uses a quasi-ferroelectric plate 22 with electrodes 11-16 on both major surfaces, the charge storage state of a region being determined by 6328 A radiation 18 from a HeNe laser 17 which passes through a polarizer 19 and an analyser 20 to a detector or screen 21. An electrode structure providing eight separately controlled storage regions is shown in Fig. 7. Alternatively a matrix structure of electrodes may be used, Fig. 9 (not shown). An optical system for a picture display is shown in Fig. 8a, radiation from a HeNe laser 33 being adjusted by lenses 35, 36 to an enlarged collimated beam before passing through a polarizer 38, the ferroelectric plate 23 and an analyser 39. Lenses 40 and 41 further enlarge the beam for projection to a screen 42. In a modification, Fig. 8b, lenses 43 and 44 together form a projection system.
