Abstract

1425510 Burnishing by rolling AMTEL Inc 12 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11715/73 Heading B3M A roller burnishing tool comprises a mandrel 16, 17 having a frusto-conical end portion 15, a roller cage 14 holding a plurality of frustoconical rollers 12 in contact with the portion 15, and yieldable means exerting an axial force on the mandrel in a direction to move the rollers into contact with a workpiece 10, the yieldable means being operable to permit the mandrel to move axially and thus allow the rollers to exert less pressure on the workpiece upon excessive burnishing pressure being developed. A shank 25 drives the mandrel via a pin 19 and slot 18, and has bore 26 receiving spring discs 40 which act as the yieldable means. The pressure of the spring discs is adjusted by a set screw 44. The diameter of the tool is adjusted by moving the mandrel relative to the cage 14 by means of a nut 28. The spring discs may be replaced by a pneumatic pressure cylinder arrangement. An alternative embodiment is disclosed for burnishing the external surface of a cylindrical workpiece.
