Abstract
1425272 Photohardenable materials containing silver halide layers El DU PONT DE NEMOURS &CO 2 May 1973 20747/73 Heading G2C A photo-sensitive material comprises, in any order, (a) a support, (b) a photohardenable layer and (c) a photo-developable silver halide emulsion layer so that layer (c) can be imagewise exposed from the side remote from layer (b) and photodeveloped to provide an original for exposing layer (b). An image in layer (b) is produced by imagewise exposure of (c) as above so that layer (b) is not affected, uniformly exposing to U.V. to develop the silver image and then uniformly exposing preferably to red light layer (b) through the silver image. The image may be developed by removing the unexposed areas with a solvent or, if a sheet (d) is laminated to (b), stripping off (d) with the unexposed areas of layer (b) adhering thereto. Layer (b) is preferably a photo-polymerizable layer but may be a photohardenable polymer. In the examples, an aluminium support or a copper support with a photo-polymerizable layer is coated or laminated with a photo-polymerizable layer which may contain a dye or c black, an acrylic polymer, a cellulose ester or polyethylene glycol. A photo-developable silver halide emulsion which may contain plumbous salts is coated over or laminated to the photo-polymerizable layer. The material is imagewise flash exposed and developed in day light to produce a silver image. The material is now uniformly exposed to tungsten light to produce a polymeric image which is developed either by (i) aqueous solution containing an organic solvent and sodium phosphate which removes the silver halide emulsion and the unexposed areas of the photo-polymerizable layer or (ii) heat and pressure and stripping so that the unexposed areas of the photo-polymerizable layer adhere to the polyester support (used instead of the Al or Cu Support specified above). Alternatively, a photopolymerizable layer on a polyester film is (i) laminated to a paper support bearing the emulsion so that the p/p layer and paper are in contact, or (ii) laminated to a polyester film bearing the emulsion so that the p/p layer and film or emulsion are in contact.
