Abstract
1425107 Heart pacer battery system AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 29 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 50273/73 Heading A5R [Also in Division H2H] A heart pacer has connected across its pacer circuit in parallel two power sources one of which has a rapid terminal failure characteristic such as that obtaining in nuclear cells, the other having lower output voltage and a slow terminal failure characteristic there being a separate diode in series with each source. A heart pacer implantable in a body may comprise a circuit 10, characterised by an increase in pacer rate with falling power source voltage. A power source 2 having a rapid terminal failure rate may be a nuclear cell type giving 6.75v to supply the pacer through a diode 4 with 0.25v potential drop. A second power source which may comprise a lithium battery 6 with a solid inorganic electrolyte giving 5.4v, having a long shelf life and an operating life of 2 to 3 months is also connected to supply the pacer circuit through a diode 8 with a 0.25v potential drop. The implanted pacer circuit may be set to operate at approximately 72 beats per minute when taking power from the source 2, source 6 being isolated by the diode 8 which is reverse biased. On failure of the source 2 the diode 4 is reverse biased and the source 6 supplies power at 5.15v to the pacer circuit which, according to its characteristic, increases its beat rate to 80 per minute thus giving readily discernible indication of the failure of the main power source.
