Abstract

1424805 Olefin sulphonates ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 7 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7622/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A process for the production of material having surface active properties comprises reacting an olefine which contains 12 to 20 carbon atoms and is substantially linear but may contain up to 30 mole per cent of branched compound, with sulphur trioxide in a molar ratio of from 1À55 to 2À0 moles of sulphur trioxide per mole of olefine, subsequently adding a calcium containing base and then heating the product to hydrolyse sultones therein, the amount of base being sufficient to neutralize the sulphonation reaction product and at least to neutralize sulphonic acids formed in the hydrolysis. The product is stated to be a mixture of calcium mono and disulphonates. It may be converted to Na or K salts. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 983,056.
