1424731 Texturising yarns J P STEVENS & CO Inc 31 May 1973 [26 June 1972 13 Oct 1972] 25970/73 Heading D1F To texturise a plurality of continuous, multifilament, thermoplastic yarns in a pressureapplying zone formed by confronting surfaces of a belt and a rotating, heated roll, which surfaces move in the same direction, the yarns are fed at a speed at least 10 per cent greater than the belt speed onto the roll whose peripheral speed is greater than the feed speed and at least 1.4 times the belt speed, the yarn filaments are differentially shrunk on the roll, the yarns are advanced into the zone where the overfed filaments are folded because the gripping power of the belt on the filament is greater than that of the roll, and the filaments are heat set in their folded configuration. The yarn feed speed may be 1.2 to 4 times the belt speed, and the roll speed may be 1.5 to 20 times, the belt speed. During setting, the yarns may be heated to a temperature greater than 212‹F, and to achieve this the roll may be maintained at 250‹F to 450‹F. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, yarns 3 are fed onto roll 7, the yarn filaments are differentially shrunk while moving distance A-B on the roll due to different contact with the roll, the yarns are then folded in a zone between the roll and belt 15, the heated roll sets the folds, and the yarns are cooled by room-temperature air in zone 22. Air jets and cold rolls may also be used for yarn cooling. Alternatively, Fig. 2, the zone between the roll and belt is shorter, and the setting may be continued by heater 42. The belts may be of cotton or polyester fabric, and metal rolls with a matt finish may be used. The yarns may be of polyamides, polyesters, polyolefines, polyurethanes and cellulose acetate.
