Abstract

1424398 Detecting gases electrically INFICON Inc 27 June 1973 30453/73 Heading GIN Halogen containing gases are detected using a sensor comprising a semi-conducting glass-ceramic body derived from a mixture comprising sodium or lithium silicate and a metal oxide and/or halide. A glass-ceramic body 11 e.g. sodium silicate, lanthanum oxide, and lanthanum fluoride is formed round platinum wire 14 and a second platinum wire 16 is wrapped round the body 11. A voltage from battery 20 is applied across wires 14, 16 and the body is heated to a temperature above 500‹C to form a depletion layer 17 caused by the migration of the alkali metal ions from terminal 16 to terminal 14. Due to the small number of carriers in the surface region the depletion layer provides a high resistance region at the surface and the conduction indicated at 22 becomes very small. In the presence of a halogen containing gas the negative ions of this gas will accumulate on the depletion layer and cause some of the alkali metal ions to migrate back to the depletion layer so that the carrier concentration in the depletion layer increases with resulting increase in current flow through meter 22. Alternative compositions are:- substituting lithium silicate for sodium silicate, or by substituting the lanthanium oxide or lanthanum fluoride with an oxide or halide of scandium, yttrium, aluminium, gallium or other rare earth metal.
