Abstract
1424262 Catheters; electrocardiographs C R BARD Inc 15 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7601/73 Heading A5R A disposable central renous catheter comprises a length of flexible tubing 11, Fig. 2, made of a material to which the body does not react; an electrical conductor 12 embedded in the wall of the tubing and extending lengthwise thereof and being electrically insulated from the interior surface 13 and exterior surface 14 of the tubing; an electrode 16 connected to the conductor 12 and mounted at the exterior surface of the tubing adjacent to but spaced from the distal end 17 of the tubing; and a terminal 18 for the conductor adjacent the proximal end 19 of the tubing for connection by a lead 21, Fig. 1, to an electrocardiograph 22. The tubing 11 is intended to be placed in the superior vena cava. The proximal end 19 of the catheter is provided with an adaptor 20 connected by tubing 25 to a three-way valve 23 having connections to a manometer tube 24 for monitoring central venous pressure and to an intravenous feed bottle 27. A needle may be inserted directly into the tubing 11 for injecting medicine into the catheter. The electrode 16 shown is formed by turning the conductor 12 out towards the exterior surface 14. In an alternative form the outer wall portion is removed to expose the conductor. The terminal 18 is formed with a circular socket (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), adapted to receive a pin end of the lead 21.
