Abstract
1424251 Discharge lamps; lasers PERKINELMER CORP 27 Sept 1973 45245/73 Headings H1D and H1C [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for pumping a laser comprises a transparent lamp envelope 10a having an effective width in the range from 1 to 30 mm. and a length of not more than 150 mm. and containing one of the inert gases Kr, Xe and A at a cold pressure in the range from 0À5 to 20 atmospheres, a coil 11a around the envelope 10a for generating a flux in the envelope, and connected in a circuit including a source 12 of RF voltage capable of supplying sufficient RF power through the coil to maintain a plasma in the gas in the envelope and means 13, 14 for adjusting the impedance of the circuit firstly to match the impedance of the cold gas in the envelope and then to match the impedance of a plasma ignited in the gas, and a mounting 22 for a laser rod 21 adjacent the lamp envelope so that light from the envelope can impinge on a laser rod carried by the mounting. The lamp 10a which is supported by an annular member 23 from one wall 20 of the chamber 18 is ignited by bringing a probe 15 of a Tesla coil 16 into contact with an extension 24 of the lamp envelope. The laser rod 21 is supported in holders 22 mounted through the chamber end walls 20 and is cooled by water circulating from an inlet 25 to an outlet 26. The capacitors 13 and 14 can be adjusted manually sufficiently rapidly for the source 12 to maintain the plasma once it has been ignited by the coil 16. The chamber 18 is surrounded by a reflector 27. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 3-8, not shown) the reflector is a coating of zinc oxide on the inner or outer surfaces of the walls of the chamber 18 which may be elliptical in shape with the lamp and laser rod mounted at the foci or spherical in shape with the lamp and laser rod mounted at the centre.
