1422594 Packaging refuse K B L LOVQVIST 8 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11340/73 Heading B8C An arrangement in association with a refuse shoot 5, for collecting refuse from the shoot, comprises a holder 6 supporting a substantially annular core 10 enclosed by a magazine of hoselike packaging material 12 which is to form consecutively a plurality of receptacles for the refuse, the packaging material being folded in the magazine with folds extending in the circumferential direction of the hose-like material to form an annular magazine, the core being movable from a first position, in which the core surrounds the path along which the refuse passes from the refuse shoot, to a second position in which the core is wholly removed from said path, and means being provided for the exchange of air between the atmosphere and the refuse shoot which is disposed above said core at least when the latter is located in said first position. Refuse from the shoot 5 is collected in the hose-like film 13 of plastics material which is closed at its lower end by a knob 17 and which is progressively drawn down by refuse, as it drops from the shoot 5, over the shoulder 14 of the core 10 from the magazine, the hose being cut and tied to form a package after the feed of refuse has been sufficient to cause the hose to topple horizontally, Fig. 1, and the cut end of the film being tied again with a knot 17. A space 18 between the lower end of the shoot 5 and the shoulder is preferably provided particularly when the shoot 5 is maintained, for instance by a fan, at sub-atmospheric pressure. In order to prevent falling refuse from damaging the hose the holder legs 6 may be made vertically elastic for instance by incorporating helical springs. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the magazine (32) is carried around a core (28) which is held within the holder (26) by trip levers (31) the downward feed of the hose (33) being resisted, to some extent, by spring-pressed fingers (34). The shoot (25) may be provided with a series of openings (38), the core being made, e.g. of corrugated board, plastics, sheet metal &e. Instead of being suspended from the ceiling the holder 6 may be located by a stand 19, Fig. 1, or supported by a wall bracket, not shown. A removable, protective, shield may be located below the shoot to partially, or wholly, enclose the bag-like extension of the hose. In a further modification, Fig. 5, a holder 57 comprises a core 59 and an outer annular member 62 which is hingedly, and vertically, adjustably mounted upon the upper rod 52 of telescopically adjustable rods 51, 52 carried by a base 50 and clampable between the floor and ceiling 3 of a room, the holder 57 being horizontally swingable from an operative position beneath, to an inoperative position remote from, the shoot 5. The plastics material of the hose may be P.V.C., polyethylene, polypropylene, or other low-cost, flexible, material.
