Abstract
1421481 Insulated pipe joints BRUUN & SORENSEN Ltd 21 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 13771/73 Heading F2G A joint between two sections of a thermally insulated pipe comprises a welded join 10 between the ends of a carrier pipe 4, 8 of each section, each section being provided with cylindrical insulation material 12, 16 surrounding the carrier pipe 4, 8, either with or without the interposition of an air space 18, and held in place by an outer pipe 14, 20, a pair of water stops 22, 24 spaced apart on either side of the join 10 each being in the form of a sleeve to fit over the end of the associated outer pipe 14, 20 and carrier pipe 4, 8 with at least one fibre washer 42, 44 disposed in a recess in the sleeve and surrounding the carrier pipe, the fibre washers being expansible on absorbing liquid to grip or to cause a deformable member, e.g. an associated rubber ring, to grip and seal against the carrier pipe, cylindrical insulation material 54 surrounding the welded join 10 between the outer stops and held in place by a split bush 56, and a further sleeve 62 preferably of heat shrinkable material such as polyvinylchloride sealed by rubber rings 58, 60 to the ends of the outer pipes 14, 20 and surrounding the water stops 22, 24 and the insulation material 54. The water stop sleeves may also be of heat shrinkable material and provided with ridges 30, 32 to grip the outer pipes or secured by adhesive thereto. Compression end caps 50, 52 are provided on the water stop sleeves around the fibre washers 42, 44 to retain the sleeves in position and the insulation material 54 is preferably made in two halves for ease of fitting. The fibre washers are suitably provided in a pack 80a (Fig. 7) disposed within a metal sealing ring 76 also containing an annular member 78 of neoprene. On absorbtion of liquid, the washers expand and force the member 78 to seal against the associated carrier pipe. In an alternative embodiment the member 78 is replaced by a neoprene 0-ring.
