Abstract

1421068 Controlling nuclear reactors GROUPMENT POUR LES ACTIVITES ATOMIQUES ET AVANCEES 4 June 1973 [2 June 1972] 26595/73 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor embodying a safety control device utilizing a liquid reaction absorber, e.g. Li-6, comprises a reservoir 1 disposed in the reactor and including an upper compartment 3 containing the absorber and gas under a pressure P1 and a lower compartment 4 containing gas under a higher pressure P2, the lower compartment having an opening to the exterior of the reservoir, which opening normally is sealed by means which is caused to open under certain reactor conditions so as to depressurize the lower compartment 4 whereby the absorber flows thereinto from the upper compartment 3. In the embodiment shown the opening is formed by a tube 7 and is closed by a brazed-in uranium plug 8. Liquid absorber is introduced into the compartment 4 initially via a charging aperture 11 and gas, e.g. argon or helium, is supplied via a valve 10 to create the aforesaid pressures and move the liquid into the compartment 3 through an annular conduit 5 and siphon 6. The reservoir 1 is then disposed in the reactor (e.g. a sodium-cooled, fast reactor) and, in the event of an undue rise in neutron flux, the plugretaining braze melts, plug 8 is ejected, the lower compartment is depressurized, and the absorber flows thereinto. In another embodiment (not shown) the opening of the lower compartment is closed by a frangible diaphragm and the reservoir is disposed in a gas-cooled reactor. Loss of reactor coolant pressure causes the diaphragm to rupture.
