1420626 Gas operated multi firing mode rifles STURM RUGER & CO Inc 1 Oct 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 45390/72 Heading F3C In a gas operated auto-loading rifle with a fixed barrel 10 and a longitudinally movable bolt 12, an activator link positioner 73 pivotable on a frame is positionable in a rearmost position for placing a firing mechanism in a single shot firing mode, an activator link 76 pivotable on the positioner being held against actuation so that after a single shot, a secondary sear 40 pivotable on the frame retains a hammer 42 until, upon return of a pivotable trigger 15, a primary sear 38 of the trigger retains the hammer; in an intermediate burst firing mode position of the positioner 73, the link 76 is moved so that it engages a longitudinal rocker arm 87 pivoted on the frame whereby upon bolt forward movement, the rear arm end rises to cause a sear disengager arm 80 of the link to raise a sear support member 96, by contact with a surface 114 of an interrupter disc 103 rotatably mounted in the forward end of the member 96, to disengage the secondary sear for subsequent firing; mounted rotatably with the disc 103 is a ratchet wheel 104 which is indexed one tooth per shot by a pawl 117 pivotally mounted on the hammer 42 so that after a predetermined number of shots indexing of the disc provides a or one notch 115 for reception of the arm 80 to prevent actuation of the secondary sear and further firing; in a forwardmost continuous firing mode position of the positioner 73, the link 76 is moved forwardly so that the arm 80 cannot enter the notch(es) 115 so that continuous firing occurs. During single shot firing return of the trigger 15 causes a lug 100 thereon to raise the member 96 to disengage the secondary sear 40 from the hammer 42 but with the' primary sear 38 engaging the hammer. The link 76 is held by engagement of a lug 123 of the trigger 15 with a surface 82 of the link and by a pin 35 acting as the trigger pivot engaging a slot. 81 of the link. In the other firing modes, a pin 79 of the link 76 engages a fork of the rocker arm 87 which is spring biased for rear end depression but which is raised by engagement of a finger 89 thereof with part of the bolt 12 when the latter is in its forwardmost position. The firing modes are chosen by manual adjustment of a selector assembly 57 which, via a pin 67 thereof and a slot 77 of the positioner 73, positions the link 76. The disc 103, and the wheel 104 are held after each index movement by a spring biased plunger 110 enaging recesses 109 of the disc. The 'secondary sear 40 and the support member 96 may be integral or separate but both pivotable on the trigger pivot. Bolt recoil is by a gas operated slide with spring return.
