Abstract

1420517 Finishing fabrics; woven fabrics DU PONT OF CANADA Ltd 5 Oct 1973 [26 Oct 1972] 46730/73 Headings D1S and D1K A woven fabric is formed from tapes in the form of a laminate of which a surface layer is a low density ethylene polymer film and an adjacent layer is high density ethylene polymer film or polypropylene film, using one such tape as warp and the same or another such tape as weft, and is heated to improve the weave stability thereof. A specified laminate comprises a high density ethylene polymer film sandwiched between two low density ethylene polymer films. Low density ethylene polymers are defined as ethylene polymers and ethylene/ higher α-olefin copolymers of density in the range of 0.910-0.930. Preferably, the gauge of the low density polymer in each tape is in the range of 0.05-0.60 mil and at least one tape is used which contains a high density ethylene polymer or polypropylene having a gauge in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 mil. The tapes may be oriented prior to the weaving of the fabric. Preferably, the fabric is heated so that the temperature of the low density ethylene polymer is between the softening point and the melting point of said polymer. Heating may be effected by the use of a hot air oven, radiant heaters, at least one heated roll or a tenter frame.
