Abstract

1419281 Gussetting tubular films WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 3 Oct 1973 [3 Oct 1972] 46276/73 Heading B5B Side-folds or gussets are formed in a flattened tubular film by means of the illustrated apparatus. The film passes through the nip 4 of nip rolls 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, is inflated by air and passed through funnel 8 to the nip 16 of a second nip roll pair 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. Gussets are formed in funnel 8 by means of side-folding plates 7 which may be adjustable to give gussets of different depths and widths. Nips 4 and 16 are at an angle to each other as viewed along line 13. This enables the folds in the original flattened web to remain as folds, folded in the same sense. However, this would mean that the film leaves the apparatus in a direction different from that at which it enters so means are provided to return the film to the original direction. These means include a non-rotating bar 21 around which the film passes, adjusting its direction as it does so. A direction-changing roll 19 may be provided so that the film passes around it during passage between nip-rolls and bar, reversing its direction. This roll 19 will be further from the axis 13 than bar 21. Preferably the distance from axis 13 to bar 21 is a quarter of the circumference of the bar. Preferably the bar 21 is aligned to bisect the angle formed by the two nip roll pairs. The angle between the nip rolls may be made adjustable by providing a drive means to move one pair relatively to the other. The drive means illustrated also alters the angle of bar 21, maintaining it at half the angle between the nip roll pairs.
