Abstract

1419201 Soil substitute BAYER AG 14 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7192/73 Heading C1B [Also in Division C3] A polyurethane foam having a density of from 7 to 100 kg./m.<SP>3</SP> and containing from 0À1 to 5 mVal/g. of mobile ions, of which preferably from 20 to 80% are cations and from 80 to 20% are anions (see Division C3) may be used as the sole substrate or mixed with soil as the substrate for cultivating plants, propagating seedlings, planting of seeds and bulbs and physical and chemical soil improvement. For the propagation of seedlings and planting of seeds the foam may be in the form of blocks, strands or panels. Hydrophilic, elastic compressed foams in the form of panels, webs or mats are particularly suitable for growth from seeds. For physical and chemical soil improvement, the foams are used in the form of flakes or granules. Other natural soil loosening substances such as peat, cellular plastics and natural waste materials such as bonemeal and leather powder may be added to the foam for soil improvement.
