Abstract
1417895 Heating systems CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 18 June 1973 [26 June 1972, 28910/73 Heading F4U [Also in Division E1] An offshore structure 10 for use in a region in which the formation of sea-ice is likely, is surrounded by a shell 20, at least the region at sea-level being maintained at a temperature above freezing. As shown the shell defines, with an inner wall 68 and a plurality of radial walls. 67, water-filled chambers 24 connected by pipes 58, 62 to manifolds 54, 60, water from the upper manifold 58 being pumped through pipes 42, 44 in heater exchange with the exhaust gases from turbines 34, 36, to the lower manifold 60. The shell has a frusto-conical shape at sea-level, and wear plates 90 tend to deflect upwards any impinging ice. The chambers are individually controlled by valves 65, 66, and may be emptied of water by opening valves 26 and introducing compressed air from compressors 30. In another arrangement heated water is circulated through pipes located in panels mounted on the inner side of the shell in the region of sea level, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The water may be sea-water with anti-corrosion and anti-freeze additives.
