Abstract

1416163 Air separation BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 5 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 912/72 Heading F4P In an air separation process, the air is subjected to oxygen enrichment to at least 30% oxygen, preferably 70-85%, and then cooled and rectified. Feed air is passed through a filter 10, compressor 12 and after-cooler 14, and fed to an adsorption unit 16 having purging and evacuating means, where nitrogen water vapour and carbon dioxide are alternately absorbed and rejected, the oxygen-enriched stream then being passed through a heat exchanger 24 where the stream is divided into two streams prior to introduction to a single stage rectification column, one stream 26 being work-expanded at 28. Nitrogen withdrawn through line 34 cools heat exchanger 24 and unit 16, and oxygen is withdrawn at 38. A further, argon-rich stream may be withdrawn at 36. The column 32 has a reflux and reboil cycle 40. A two-stage column may be used, the enriched air being compressed to about 15 bars, a portion being employed as reboil in the lower stage. The air may be enriched by membrane separation or diffusion, and the enriched air may be added to a further stream of compressed air before rectification.
