Abstract

1415929 Lead phthalates and their use as stabilizers for synthetic resins ASSOCIATED LEAD MFRS Ltd D G PEARSON and D YOUD 28 March 1974 [24 April 1973] 19299/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises dibasic lead phthalate of novel crystalline form which, as a stabilizer, imparts increased volume resistivity to polyvinyl chloride and has an infra red absorption spectrum characterized by absence of a sharp absorption peak in the region of 3540 cm.<SP>-1</SP> and a broad absorption in the region of 430 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, the presence of a sharp single absorption peak in the region of 753 cm.<SP>-1</SP> and the presence of sharp absorption peaks in the regions of 3400 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, 797 cm.<SP>-1</SP> and 320 cm.<SP>-1</SP>, and an X-ray diffraction pattern characterized by peaks at d(Š) values of 16À1, 8-0, 3À49 and 3À34. The lead phthalate according to the invention may be prepared by reacting litharge and phthalic anhydride in a kneader in the presence of triethanolamine and a restricted amount of water. The novel phthalate is used to stabilize a P.V.C. compound of the following composition in parts by weight P.V.C. Corvic D 65/8 (Registered Trade Mark) 100 Dioctyl phthalate 50 Novel dibasic lead phthalate 5 Stearic acid 0À5 The novel phthalate increased the electrical sensitivity of the composition.
