Abstract

1414746 Gas nitriding ferrous parts MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 27 Feb 1973 [13 April 1972] 9481/73 Heading C7U Ferrous parts are nitrided by placing in a furnace and heating to 1,000‹F to 1200‹F in a nitriding atmosphere consisting of a non-combustible carrier gas and 5 to 25% by volume of ammonia, the hydrogen content of the nitriding atmosphere being maintained between 3% and 10% by volume by introducing additional non-combustible carrier gas while withdrawing portions of the nitriding atmosphere, the parts being subjected to the nitriding atmosphere for ¢ to 10 hours until a compound layer of complex nitrides of a thickness of approximately 0.0005" and composed principally of epsilon phase iron nitride exists at the surface of the parts. The carrier gas may be of composition 95-97% nitrogen, ¢-1¢% carbon monoxide and 2-4% hydrogen and may be obtained by reacting air with methane or natural gas and removing CO 2 and water from the resulting mixture.
