Abstract
1414260 Quadraphonic transmission ELEKTROMEOHANIKAI VALLALAT 16 Feb 1973 [28 Dec 1972] 7848/73 Heading H4L Signals 1, 2, 3, 4 from a rectangular array of microphones 1-4 are coded and transmitted (for example, in frequency multiplex) to four loudspeakers 8, 9, 10, 11 respectively receiving them as double signals 1+2, 2+3, 3+4 and 4+1. The rectangular array of speakers is turned through 45 degrees relative to the microphone array in order to reproduce from virtual sources 12, 13, 14, 15 a sound pattern which is identical to, and has the same orientation as, that sensed by the microphones. A coder 5 turns the four microphone signals into three composite signals, the first being a sum of all four (1+2+3+4), the second and third being the diagonal differences (1-3, 2-4). A main channel of 30 Hz to 15 kHz (1, Fig. 2, not shown) carries the sum signal, and quadrature subcarriers (4) centred on 38 kHz carry the other two signals. Pilots at 19 kHz and 38 kHz are included, the latter to operate stereoquadraphonic mode switching circuits at the receiver. The transmission link 6 is radio or line. The decoder 7 turns the three composite signals into the four loud-speaker signals in an unspecified manner.
