Abstract

1414170 Hydrotreating lubricating oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 20 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971 (2)] 48440/72 Heading C5E Lubricating oils are produced by fractionating a crude lubricating oil of which 10-90% by volume boils below 510‹ C. into a residual and a distillate fraction, hydrotreating the residual fraction at 343-454‹ C. and hydrotreating the distillate fraction at 371-482‹ C. under more severe conditions than those employed for hydrotreating the residual fraction; the conditions employed for hydrotreating both fractions comprise a pressure of 140-700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, a CHSV of 0À1-10, a hydrogen feed rate of 35À6- 178 SCM per 100 litres of charge oil and are such that yields of at least 50% by volume, based upon the respective charge oils, of hydrotreated materials boiling above 329‹ C. are obtained. A suitable catalyst comprises nickel and tungsten on silicaalumina and is promoted with fluorine. Fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment in which an oil 10 is separated into a distillate 14 which is hydrotreated at 34 and a residue 16 which is deasphalted at 18 with propane and then hydrotreated at 28; the hydrotreated effluents are fractionated either separately or in combination. Fig. 3, not shown, illustrates an embodiment in which the distillate is hydrotreated in a first zone and then hydrotreated in a second zone in combination with the deasphalted fraction. Fig. 4, not shown, illustrates an embodiment similar to Fig. 1 but.in which the oil is separated into two distillate fractions and one residual fraction and these fractions are separately hydrotreated. Fig. 5, not shown, illustrates an embodiment in which an oil is separated into three distillate fractions and one residual fraction and these fractions are separately hydrotreated in a single reactor employing a blocked operation.
