Abstract

1414159 Block copolymeric toners in electrostatography XEROX CORP 20 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 58889/72 Headings C3P C3T and C3R [Also in Division G2] Toner particles for developing an electrostatic latent image comprise a block copolymer containing an ABA structure where either the A blocks or the B block is a tough polymer block i.e. an amorphous polymer block having a Tg greater than 50‹ C. or a crystalline block have a Tm greater than 50‹ C., and wherein the other block(s) is (are) a soft polymer which has Tg of less than 20‹ C. and may be crystalline or amorphous. In practice, the particles contain a colorant and may be used in conventional manner for developing latent images, typically with the use of a carrier. In the examples, the following block copolymers are dissolved in suitable solvents, small amounts of carbon black colorant added, the solvent evaporated by spray drying to form the toner and the latter is combined with steel beads coated with styrene - methyl methacrylate - vinyltriethoxy silane copolymer or with sand coated with ethyl cellulose to form a developer which is used to develop an electrostatic latent image on a selenium plate by the cascading method, the image being transferred to paper and fixed by steel roller pressure. The copolymers are: ethylene oxide - b - styrene or bis phenol - A- carbonate - b - ethylene oxide, isobutyl acrylate - b - methylmethacrylate - b - isobutyl acrylate, n - hexylmethacrylate - b - styrene - bn - hexylmethacrylate, caprolactone - b - styrene - b - caprolactone, dimethylsiloxane-bstyrene - b - dimethylsiloxane, butadiene - bstyrene - b - butadiene, ethylene - b - vinylcyclohexane - b - ethylene, ethylene - balphamethyl - styrene - b - ethylene, dimethyl siloxane - b - bisphenol - A - carbonate or sulphone - b - dimethylsiloxane, ethylene adipate - b - styrene or ethylene isophthalateb - ethylene adipate, and butadiene - bethylene isophthalate-b-butadiene.
