Abstract

1413848 Grain refining and fluxing compositions FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 17 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23219/72 Headings C7D and C7M A composition for the grain refinement of aluminium or aluminium alloys comprising:- (i) 15 to 85 wt per cent metallic titanium and/or titanium alloy containing not less than 85% titanium (ii) 2.5 to 70 wt per cent of complex alkali metal fluoride selected from one or more of sodium borafluoride, sodium titanafluoride, potassium borafluoride, potassium titanafluoride, sodium zirconium fluoride and potassium zirconium fluoride and (iii) 0-46 wt per cent of a metal having a density greater than 4.5 grms./cm<SP>3</SP> (e.g. manganese, copper, iron, ferromanganese or a nickle chromium alloy the content of said metal not exceeding the content of said titanium or titanium alloy, the content of (ii) being at least 12% of the content of said Ti or Ti alloy; said Ti and/or Ti alloy having a particle size not greater than 400 microns, and said composition having a density of at least 2.4 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. Alkali or alkaline earth metal halide e.g. NaCl, KCI, NaF, KF, Na 3 AlF 6 , K 3 AlF 6 or carbonate fluxing agent may be present in the composition in an amount up to 53 wt per cent and the composition may be added in tablet form to a melt in an amount of 0.005 to 0.2% of Ti by weight.
