Abstract
1413486 Oscillators; frequency changers; delay lines MARCONI CO Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [26 April 1972] 19249/72 Headings H3F and H3U To alter the phase transfer characteristic of a surface wave delay line used in the feedback path of an amplifier to form an oscillator, and hence to vary the oscillator frequency, there is provided, either a thin film gold strip plate 4, Fig. 4, between input and output transducers 6, 7, on piezo substrate 5, of the line, or one, or two as shown, thin film spiral inductors 8, 9, Fig. 5 in series with an electrode of the transducers 6, 7. The phase transfer is adjusted by adjusting the width W of plate 4 by laser, electron beam or mechanical machining, the plate altering the wave velocity under it. Inductors, 8, 9 are adjusted by shorting out parts of turns using a wire bonding machine. The handpass characteristic of the line is displayed in Fig. 2 (not shown). Typical operating frequencies, inductance values, and phase shifts are given. Inductors 8, 9 are formed together with the transducers photolithographically.
