Abstract
1413011 Electrolytic production of perfluoro compounds BAYER AG 12 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1794/73 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] Electro-chemical fluorination of an alkanesulphonyl halide to produce a perfluoroalkanesulphonyl fluoride is effected in HF in the presence of an unsaturated cyclic sulphone, such as butadiene sulphone. It is preferred to use anhydrous HF. The electrolytic cell is preferably made of nickel with anodes of nickel and cathodes of nickel or iron arranged alternately with a voltage of 4.5-8 volts and current density of about 0.5 a/dm<SP>2</SP>. In an example the electrolyte is circulated at 250 litres/hour and n-octane sulphonyl fluoride is thus converted to perfluoro-n-octane sulphonyl fluoride.
