1412794 Packaging coil strip BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 6 April 1973 [16 May 1972] 22948/72 Addition to 1275602 Heading B8C A packaged coil 10, of strip material is provided with protective material 12 wrapped around the circumference of the coil with an axially outwardly directed overhanging projection 13 of protective material around the outer circumferential edge at each end of the coil, protective material 14 provided in the eye 11 of the coil, a stiff annular member 15 of protective material adjacent each end of the coil within the overhanging projection of protected material and an annular flexible cushioning 16 at at least the radially outermost edge of the annular member 15 immediately adjacent to the overhanging projection of protective material 12. As shown, the material 12 is sheet strip, the material which is folded radially inwardly of the coil at each end thereof 14 and the member 15 are of steel sheet and the cushioning 16 is polyurethane foam. Waterproof paper 17 is interposed between the coil 10 and the material 12 and extends into the eye 11. Sheet eye trumpets 18 extend partially into the eye 11 and partially across the ends of the coil 10 and the various elements of the package are secured by steel bands 19. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), a sealing compound (20) of bitumastic compound is applied around the outer and inner edges of the coil at each end thereof and beneath the member 15. In a further arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown) the trumpets 18 are replaced by an annular member (22) coated with polyurethane foam (16) which covers each end of the coil and extends into the eye (11). Again, Fig. 5 (not shown), the projection (13) at each end of the coil is deformed radially inwardly over a cushioning ring of polyurethane (23) when the coil is banded by band (19), the polyurethane being applied from an aerosol to the periphery of the member (15). The package is produced on a machine, Fig. 6 (not shown), which comprises a paper wrapper station (31), conveyer (34), sheet wrapping station (32), a station (33) for applying members 15 and a banding station (37). The machine may be a modified version of that described in Specification 1,275,602. In order to permit drainage from the package, the material 12 is formed with perforations (40), Fig. 7 (not shown), formed at the apices of frusto-conical projections (42). The projections may be formed at the wrapping station (32) by cooperating rollers (44)-(46), Fig. 8 (not shown).
