Abstract

1412122 Retractive switches ARROW-HART (EUROPE) Ltd 4 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 2960/72 Heading H1N A switch for incorporation in the handle 1 of a lawn mower, for example, comprises a tubular elongate housing portion 3a, 3c, a fixed contact and a co-operating movable contact, an actuating member 21 with its pivotal axis substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said housing portion and finger-operable to close the contacts, a locking means 31 in the housing portion at a region remote from the actuating member 21 and manually slidable lengthwise of the housing portion between a first position, which prevents member 21 from closing the contacts, and a second position, which permits relative movement of member 21 to effect closure of the contacts, and means 35 urging the locking means 31 towards said first position. As shown, the locking means 31 comprises an insulating plate having a dependant finger 36, which abuts actuator 21 to prevent operation thereof. If the plate 31 is moved against the action of spring 35 by means of a thumb button 32, the finger 36 can enter a bore 27 and actuator 21 may then be pivoted against the action of its spring 30. An insulating plate 6 carries two strips 11 with fixed contacts (17, Fig. 5, not shown), and two spring blades 39 having contacts (18) for co-operation with the fixed contacts (17) to form a double-pole switch. As shown, blades 39 are biased towards the fixed contacts and lateral projections 25 on actuator 21 normally hold the contacts open due to the spring 30 being effectively stronger than blades 39. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) the blades (19) carrying the moving contacts (18) are biased away from the fixed contacts and the projections 25 positively close the contacts when actuator 21 is pivoted.
