Abstract
1411758 Refrigerating AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 6 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56287/72 Heading F4H Flow of working fluid through the Joule- Thomson orifice 22 of a cryostat 10 is controlled by a needle valve 24 in a block 23 slidably disposed within a mandrel 12, the block having a thin walled tube 32 affixed thereto which is connected to a flexible bellows 34, the space between the bellows, block and tube defining a temperature sensing bulb 35 filled with a fluid e.g. nitrogen gas. The sensing bulb is located between 5% and 30% of the distance from the cold end 20 of the cryostat towards the warm end 16. The bellows 34 has a cap 36 through which a charging tube 38 extends into the bellows at one end and at the other into a bellows extension tube 40 with a cap 42 welded to the mandrel 12. A finned heat-exchange coil 15 for the working fluid extends about the mandrel, and a dewar vessel (not shown) surrounds the cryostat. In a modification the sensing bulb is connected by a capillary tube to a bellows located in a housing which is secured to the warm end of the mandrel. In a further modification the dewar vessel and mandrel are of stepped form, or the bellows is situated within the sensing bulb.
