1411438 Moulding non-woven fibrous articles WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 30 May 1973 [8 June 1972] 26843/72 Addition to 1329409 Heading B5A In a method of manufacturing a non-planar, non-woven fibrous article, e.g. a glove, sock or container, a dispersion of fibres and particulate matter in a foamed liquid medium prepared in accordance with any one of Claims 1 to 9 of Specification 1,329,409 is fed into a porous mould and drained therethrough to form the article. The mould may have areas of different porosity and may be rigid or flexible and may be comprised of a number of parts enabling article removal. The dispersion may include fibres of natural or synthetic wood pulp, natural or synthetic textiles, glass, or fibres obtained from the tobacco plant; it may include a synthetic or natural gum binder and various agents such as a dye, filler, anti-oxidant or plasticizer. A number of different foamed dispersions may be consecutively drained through the mould before removal of the resultant article. In Fig. 1 a cylindrical porous mould 3 composed of metal wire mesh 4 within a coarser mesh 5 is located within a metal casing 1 with a valved drain pipe 8 and a suction pipe 6. A foamed dispersion is fed to the mould interior with the valve of the pipe 8 closed and vacuum is applied to the space between the mould and casing by the pipe 6, whereby water and air from the dispersion is removed and fibres and binder are deposited on the inner surface of the mould. The removed article is dried and, if it contains a fusible polymeric binder, hot pressed between dies.
