Abstract
1411232 Insulation article containing hydrated calcium silicate and cellulosic fibres GAF CORP 4 Oct 1972 [8 Oct 1971] 45776/72 Heading C3N [Also in Division D2] A thermal insulation article suitable for use at temperatures up to 1250‹ F. comprises a reinforced hydrated calcium silicate element which has been obtained by reacting a mixture of slaked lime and siliceous material in the presence of reinforcing cellulosic fibres substantially free from lignins, wood sugars, and other impurities that interfere with the formation of hydrated calcium silicate, the cellulosic fibre content of the element being 5-30% by weight thereof and the compressive strength of the element at 5% deformation thereof being at least 175 p.s.i. after heat treatment at 1250‹F. for 6 hours. The siliceous material is preferably diatomaceous earth with an SiO 2 content of at least 84% by weight. The cellulosic fibres may be a chemical wood pulp prepared by digestion of wood using the sulphate pulping process. Sulphite pulps may also be used. An article in which asbestos replaces the cellulosic fibres is also disclosed.
