Abstract
1410634 Making moulds by dipping IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 47920/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A method of preparing a mould comprises the steps of immersing a disposable pattern into a composition comprising a particulate refractory material, a binder, a liquid dispersant and fibres, removing the coated pattern from the composition, drying the adherent coating and removing the pattern. A conventional primer and coating followed by a stucco coat may be applied to the pattern first. During dipping of the pattern into the composition it is desirable that the composition is agitated. The composition may also contain a thickening agent for rendering the composition thixotropic. The particulate refractory may be silica, tabular alumina, bauxite, MgO, CaO, TiO 2 , ZnO, SnO 2 , magnesite, mag-chrome grog, zirconium silicate, ZrO 2 , sillimanite, andasulite, kyanite, mullite, porcelain, clays, SiC, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, boron, Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , chromite or mica. The binder may be an alkyl silicate, monoalkyl silicate, monoethanolamine silicate, alkali metal silicate, silica sol, aluminium oxychloride, gypsum/silica mix, cement, aluminium phosphate. Numerous common dispersants are specified. The fibres may be oxides, nitrides and/or carbides of Be, Mg, Ca, Ti, Zr, B, Al and Si, e.g. zirconia, carbon fibres, metal whiskers or wires, glass fibres, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, or mineral wool. The thickening agent may be bentonite, fuller's earth, organically modified magnesium silicate clays, cellulose ethers, fumed silica or a starch. The composition suitably comprises, in per cent by weight, 10-90% refractory material, 1-15% binder (dry solids content), 5-50% dispersant, 0À01-10% fibres and 0À05-10% thickening agent.
